Top 10 Phrases in Irish all Photographers Should Know! – Seamless
So you are doing a photo shoot on St. Patrick’s Day and you really want to impress your clients. What better way to show off your worldliness and earn some extra bonus points than by speaking some Irish on Ireland’s national holiday?
While all of your friends are off in the pub take this opportunity to learn some common phrases photographers use all the time but with a twist of being in the native Irish tongue. These sentences might even make it into your daily work life so you can speak to your team in secret or you might just pick up a little ‘luck of the Irish’ on your next shoot from the team at Seamless.
1. Deisigh i Photoshop é. (Fix it in Photoshop!)
Let’s face it, we always try to get things right in camera but at the end of a long day it’s sometimes easier to fix things in post. Say these magic words and your clients won’t know the truth about what’s really going on!
2. An bhfuil cadhnraí breise agat? (Do you have spare batteries?)
It can happen to the best of us. The light in the church was a little weaker than expected and you had to bump up your flash’s power output causing the batteries to drain almost instantly. In times like this you can now ask your assistant in secret if they remembered to pack the spare batteries.
3. Déan mar a deireann an bhrídeog. (Do what the bride says.)
Ignore at your own peril!
4. Cuir an milleán ar an gcúntóir. (Blame it on the assistant.)
If you’ve ever worked as a photographer’s assistant then you know that when things are going right it’s “we” and when things are going wrong it’s “you”. If you hear the phrase above when a shoot is starting to head south, be prepared to run!
5. Ró-álainn atá tú chun Photoshop a dhéanamh ort! (You’re too pretty to Photoshop!)
Everyone knows somebody that hates getting their photograph taken and a cheesy compliment can go a long way to helping your subject relax. Up your game too by speaking in Irish and add some Celtic mysticism to your cringe-worthy charm offensive.
6. A haon, a dó, a trí! Sláinte! (One, Two, Three! Cheers!)
Equally useful when shooting a group photo or when having a drink after a hard day’s work!
7. Ní hea, níl cead agat an grianghraf a fheiceáil! (No, you can’t see the photo!)
Sometimes being a photographer is like being a magician. It’s all smoke and mirrors and we hate it when someone wants to see how it’s done. Now, the next time someone wants to see the back of your camera, distract them with your Irish and get them talking about something else.
8. An bhfuil cead agam an cárta cuimhne seo a fhormáidiú? (Can I format this memory card?)
If you have to ask then the answer is no but sometimes it’s good to be sure to be sure!
9. Tá mé caillte. An bhfuil bainis ar siúl anseo? (I’m lost. Is there a wedding here?)
This one is probably only useful if you happen to be shooting a wedding in the West of Ireland. However, you never know when it might come in handy!
10. Cinnte, tá lánchead agam pionta a ól! (Of course I can have a pint.)
It’s been a long day’s shoot but your clients are delighted, your memory cards are backed up and no assistants were harmed in the making of the photographs. Now go and have a well earned and refreshing pint and remember that when the going gets tough you can ‘deisigh i Photoshop é.’
All together now! A haon, a dó, a trí! Sláinte!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
