ZEISS Batis: New Lenses For Sony a Series Have OLED Display.
ZEISS have just announced a set of new Batis lenses that also feature an OLED display. The new ZEISS Batis 25 mm f/2 and 85 mm f/1.8 are the first to feature this type of technology in this form and looks set to become a very intriguing piece of kit.
ZEISS Batis Lens And Image Quality.
ZEISS is pitching these lenses to the professional. They said that their new ZEISS Batis lenses are, “The first full-frame autofocus lenses with an OLED display for the mirrorless Sony a series… As professional tools, they enable outstanding outcomes with optical image performance, impressive contrast and maximum resolution down to the very last detail.”
Both ZEISS Batis lenses feature dust and weather-resistant designs and both offer the latest anti-reflective coating. The 85 mm also boasts optical image stabilisation.
What Can The OLED Display Do?
ZEISS said, “The innovative OLED display shows the distance of the focal plane from the camera system and the depth of fields, therefore ideally supporting creative image composition.”
Of course, this type of information has been available on manual lenses for years in the form of scales but the fact that the ZEISS Batis lenses are offering them through an OLED display means that the information on show can change depending on what you are doing and what your current needs are. This added functionality and possible customisation, along with the solid reputation of the Sony Alpha system, is what’s drawing the interest of photographers.
When Can You Buy Them?
ZEISS Batis lenses are available in a portrait and wide-angle focal length and will work best on Sony Alpha cameras such as the A7 II, A7R and A7S. The ZEISS Batis 25 mm f/2 and Batis 85 mm f/1.8 lenses will be available for purchase from July 2015. Pricing has yet to be announced.
We will have to wait for the first reviews to find out just how useful the new OLED displays will be but for now, this sure does look like an interesting technology offering useful information where it’s needed most.
